Meet Amanda Puryear El

Discover the journey of a poet dedicated to nature, community, and the power of words.

A heart deeply connected to nature

If there's one thing Amanda Puryear El wants you to know right away, it's her profound love for nature, especially birds. This deep connection to the natural world often inspires her poignant and powerful poetry, bringing a unique perspective to her storytelling.

Uplifting the barrio through poetry

Amanda's work extends far beyond the page and stage; it's a mission to uplift the kids in the barrio and remind them that their circumstances do not define their future. She believes that when we have nothing, we learn to understand and appreciate everything. Poetry has taught her that even in moments of struggle, we can find a voice, a purpose, and a way forward. If her words can inspire even one child to believe in themselves, to tell their story, and to see beauty in where they come from, then poetry has done what it has always done for her: it has saved her.

Inspiring through rhymes, globally and locally

Looking ahead, Amanda's biggest dream is to continue inspiring through rhymes. Her journey has already taken her to the TEDx stage in October 2024, where her performance amplified her voice beyond South Texas. The following year, she was nominated by the Texas Art Commission for State Poet Laureate, and on October 6, 2025, she made history as the first Poet Laureate of her hometown, Pharr, Texas. On August 14, 2026, she released a spoken-word poetry album featuring Rio Grande Valley Grammy winner Bobby Pulido and Grammy-nominated Ecuadorian producer Antonio Vergara, further cementing her place as one of the region’s most influential spoken-word poets.

"Amanda Puryear El's poetry is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Her ability to connect with and empower her community is truly inspiring."
